Introduction

Shimomeguro derives its name from the historic Shimomeguro Village, forming a significant residential area in the southeastern section of Meguro Ward. This neighborhood sits on elevated terrain beyond the Meguro River and Yamate-dori, where wide streets, tree-filled parks, and quiet surroundings meet close proximity to central Tokyo. The area takes its name from Meguro Fudoson (Takizenji Temple) located in Shimomeguro 3-chome, one of Tokyo's Five Colored Fudo temples, with roots stretching back to the early Heian period (808 CE). History

During the Edo period, Shimomeguro Village functioned as an ordinary farming community cultivating rice, wheat, vegetables, and bamboo shoots. Ohtori Shrine, established in 806 CE, stands as Meguro Ward's oldest shrine, hosting Tokyo's oldest Tori-no-ichi market since the Edo period.
