During the Edo period, there was a gate town called "Roppongi-cho" around the current Roppongi intersection, which was much smaller than today's boundaries.

After World War II, the area became occupied by the US military, leading to an increase in bars, restaurants, and nightclubs catering to foreigners, which naturally gave the streetscape a Western character. The opening of the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line in 1964 during the Tokyo Olympics attracted more young people. In the 1970s, discos and dance cafes increased, developing it into a lively area similar to Shinjuku and Shibuya. When the Oedo Line opened in 2000, access from many urban areas became more convenient. Roppongi Station is served by the Hibiya Line and Oedo Line, and while transfers are necessary, most major stations in Tokyo can be reached within 20 minutes. The nearest station, Roppongi Station, has Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and Toei Subway Oedo Line service. Adjacent stations including Namboku Line's "Azabu-Juban Station" and "Roppongi-itchome Station," Chiyoda Line's "Nogizaka Station," and Toei Oedo Line's "Azabu-Juban Station" are also within walking distance.
The Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line offers direct service to Ebisu, Ginza, and Ueno, making it valuable for moving through the city center vertically, and is heavily used for travel to Midtown and the Ginza area. While the Roppongi Station area is lively, since it borders Azabu, Akasaka, and Aoyama, walking a bit reveals quiet residential areas. Kindergartens, nursery schools, and elementary schools are somewhat concentrated in those areas, and school routes tend to be on roads with less vehicle traffic.
Security concerns vary by location. Around Roppongi Station, while incidents of burglary and bicycle theft are few, between January and November 2017, there were many violent crimes, with "Roppongi 3-chome" experiencing 50 violent acts including 25 assaults and 24 injuries. Due to numerous foreign embassies, police officers are often seen patrolling. When living in Roppongi, areas slightly away from the station have calmer security, which is recommended. Areas on the north side of the station toward "Aoyama" have fewer crimes and are more settled.
The atmosphere changes dramatically between day and night. "During the day there are many office workers and tourists with a calm business district atmosphere," while "at night there are many club-goers and foreigners making it lively but with few troubles," according to common evaluations. Security guards are stationed at plazas, parks, and commercial facilities in redeveloped areas, contributing to a sense of security, though there are also observations that "caution is necessary in areas with concentrated dining establishments as they have many people late into the night".
Cost of living is notably high. Roppongi is one of Tokyo's premier luxury residential areas, so even studio apartments and 1K units for singles exceed 100,000 yen in rent. Rent, restaurants, and supermarkets are high-priced, so living costs and many other expenses are considerable. There are not many low-priced supermarkets.
Roppongi offers exceptional shopping and dining options concentrated in major commercial complexes. Roppongi Hills centers on the 54-story Forest Tower, gathering various facilities. The Forest Tower houses shops and restaurants, offices, and a museum and observation deck on the top floor. Within the grounds are entertainment spaces, the circular Japanese garden Mori Garden, TV Asahi headquarters, a cinema complex, luxury hotel, and residences, truly resembling a cultural city. Tokyo Midtown is a complex city born in 2007 on the former Defense Agency headquarters site, gathering diverse shops and restaurants, offices, hotels, museums, and clinics. The garden area allows enjoyment of abundant nature in the middle of the city, serving as a relaxation space and popular jogging course.
There are stylish cafes, restaurants, and bars, and around Roppongi Station there are also beef bowl shops and fast food restaurants with a wide price and genre range that can be used according to lifestyle. Supermarkets are also concentrated around the station, tightly packed within walking or cycling distance, which pleases those who cook for themselves.
Shinanoya Roppongi Hills Store, which had its grand opening in July 2023, is the largest Shinanoya store, offering an extensive selection of alcohol including whiskey, temperature-controlled wine, and craft beers from around the world. The store focuses on "food safety" with many products labeled as "no chemical seasonings," "no amino acids," or "additive-free," and features original products, prepared foods, directly shipped produce, and environmentally conscious ingredients. Precce in the basement of Tokyo Midtown is a popular high-end supermarket with abundant variety, featuring extensive cheese selections, fresh fish prepared on-site, and rare coffees and teas.
