History

The name "Roppongi" has uncertain origins, with two prominent theories: one suggesting it comes from six large pine trees that once stood in the area, and another attributing it to six daimyo families with tree-related surnames (Uesugi, Kuchiki, Takagi, Aoki, Katagiri, and Ichiyanagi) who had estates nearby. During the Edo period, there was a gate town called "Roppongi-cho" around the current Roppongi intersection, which was much smaller than today's boundaries.

The current Roppongi area consists largely of former samurai estates, though the Edo-era "Roppongi-cho" was a gate town covering a narrow area near the present Roppongi intersection. After the Meiji period, former samurai estates became residential neighborhoods, and the area was blessed with spring water and groundwater, making goldfish cultivation popular. Roppongi Station is served by the Hibiya Line and Oedo Line, and while transfers are necessary, most major stations in Tokyo can be reached within 20 minutes. Around Roppongi Station, while incidents of burglary and bicycle theft are few, between January and November 2017, there were many violent crimes, with "Roppongi 3-chome" experiencing 50 violent acts including 25 assaults and 24 injuries. Due to numerous foreign embassies, police officers are often seen patrolling. When living in Roppongi, areas slightly away from the station have calmer security, which is recommended. Areas on the north side of the station toward "Aoyama" have fewer crimes and are more settled.

Shinanoya Roppongi Hills Store, which had its grand opening in July 2023, is the largest Shinanoya store, offering an extensive selection of alcohol including whiskey, temperature-controlled wine, and craft beers from around the world. The store focuses on "food safety" with many products labeled as "no chemical seasonings," "no amino acids," or "additive-free," and features original products, prepared foods, directly shipped produce, and environmentally conscious ingredients. Precce in the basement of Tokyo Midtown is a popular high-end supermarket with abundant variety, featuring extensive cheese selections, fresh fish prepared on-site, and rare coffees and teas.
