Introduction

Nishi-Gotanda is located in the northern part of Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, spanning eight districts (chome) from one through eight. The neighborhood sits adjacent to the five-lined Gotanda Station, one of Tokyo's well-connected transport hubs on the Yamanote Line. While the station area and districts 1-2 are dominated by office buildings and entertainment establishments, districts 3 and beyond feature residential neighborhoods, creating a distinct separation between commercial and residential zones. History

The name "Gotanda" derives from the Genroku-era land survey records that mention "Gotanda cultivated land," referring to rice paddies that measured five tan (approximately 5,000 square meters) per plot. The lowlands from Osaki to Gotanda along the Meguro River formed the largest rice paddy area along the Yamanote Line. In 1911, when JR Gotanda Station opened, "Gotanda" became the general name for the area around the station, and the small settlement along the Meguro River lowlands rapidly developed. Today, the administrative district name "Gotanda" no longer exists independently, having been divided into Nishi-Gotanda and Higashi-Gotanda. The fourth district's Kamuro-zaka slope is associated with the famous legend of Shirai Gonpachi from kabuki and joruri performances.

Transportation

Nishi-Gotanda benefits from exceptional connectivity through Gotanda Station. Three railway operators and three lines serve the station: JR East's Yamanote Line, Tokyu Corporation's Ikegami Line (which originates at Gotanda), and Toei Subway's Asakusa Line. From Gotanda Station, Shibuya is accessible in approximately 7 minutes, Shinagawa in about 5 minutes, Shinjuku in roughly 14 minutes, and Tokyo Station in around 17 minutes. The Asakusa Line provides direct access to Haneda Airport via connections. For residents in Nishi-Gotanda districts 4-8, Fudoumae Station on the Tokyu Meguro Line offers an additional access point, which connects to the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line. Bus service is available from stops along Yamate-dori (Route 246), approximately 150 meters from Fudoumae Station entrance.

Nishi-Gotanda presents a dual character depending on location within its eight districts. Districts 1 and 2 consist of office buildings and entertainment districts, while districts 3 onward spread into residential neighborhoods, making the residential areas more suitable for living. The major thoroughfares can be noisy, so properties set back from main roads offer quieter environments. According to 2020 Metropolitan Police data, very few crimes occur in Nishi-Gotanda, presenting a stark contrast to Higashi-Gotanda and making it suitable for women living alone. As of January 1, 2025, land prices in residential areas reached 1.13 million yen per square meter at the 4-27-6 location and 890,000 yen per square meter at the 5-31-6 location. Near the station, residents can access Seijo Ishii at Atré Gotanda 1 (23 meters from the station) and Tokyu Store Gotanda branch (97 meters away). Further into the residential areas, supermarkets include Ozeki Meguro Fudoumae branch, Tokyu Store Fudoumae branch, and several Maibasketto locations. From district 8, the affordable Togoshi Ginza shopping street is within walking distance. Togoshi Ginza stretches 1.3 kilometers with approximately 400 shops, making it Tokyo's longest shopping street, offering abundant food shopping and dining options. The Gotanda station area features numerous restaurants catering to office workers, with options ranging from affordable lunch spots to Italian restaurants, wine bars, and casual izakayas. Dining options in the residential districts are more limited but supplemented by proximity to neighboring commercial areas.
