Minamioi is a residential neighborhood located in the southeastern corner of Shinagawa Ward, bordering Ota Ward to the south. The area spans six districts (1-chome to 6-chome) and is bounded by the Tachiaigawa River to the north, with the Keihin-Tohoku Line's Omori Station and Keikyu Line's Omorikaigan Station serving as primary transport hubs. The neighborhood sits at the southernmost tip of Shinagawa Ward, with areas south of Omorikaigan Station transitioning into Ota Ward. This area retains a traditional downtown atmosphere while offering comprehensive surrounding amenities, making it appealing to everyone.
The current designation of Minamioi was established on January 1, 1964, when residential address displays were implemented, though the area was informally called "Minamioi" (southern Oi) before that as the southern section of the greater Oi district. The broader Oi area appears in the Engi-shiki records as a post station on the Tokaido road, with the Kamakura period seeing the Oi clan establish themselves here, giving rise to the name "Oi-go". During the Edo period, the notorious Suzugamori execution grounds were located in this area. In 1932, the former Oi Town of Ebara District was abolished and incorporated into Tokyo City's Shinagawa Ward.
Minamioi has Omorikaigan Station on the Keikyu Main Line in its southeastern section, with Tachiaigawa Station nearby to the northeast, and Omori Station to the southwest also heavily utilized by residents. Both Keikyu and the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line are accessible, providing wide-ranging access from Tokyo to Kanagawa and Saitama prefectures. From Omori Station, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line takes approximately 6 minutes to Shinagawa (using rapid service), 17 minutes to Tokyo Station (with transfer at Shinagawa to Yokosuka Line), and 8 minutes to Kawasaki during daytime hours. From Omorikaigan Station via Keikyu Line, travelers can reach Haneda Airport Terminal 3 in approximately 14 minutes (with transfer at Heiwaijima to Keikyu express). Since March 2022, the Shinagawa Ward community bus "Shina Bus" has been operating with stops at Omori Station North Exit and Sakurakai-mae. The well-developed bus network also provides access to the Odaiba area.
Minamioi spreads between Oimachi Station on the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line and Omori Station, with many locations within walking distance of Oimachi Station, offering excellent transportation convenience. The area features ample supermarkets, convenience stores, and drugstores handling daily necessities, eliminating shopping concerns. Located slightly away from major commercial districts, the residential areas are relatively quiet and calm, ideal for those seeking peaceful living near the urban center. Nearby elementary schools, middle schools, and daycare facilities create a well-established child-rearing environment with good educational standards, allowing families with children to live with peace of mind. The area provides access to nature through nearby Shinagawa Ward Citizen Park and Oi Wharf Central Seaside Park, which serve as popular spots for walking, jogging, and children's play. Property land prices stood at 897,000 yen per square meter at the Minamioi 6-3-16 location as of January 1, 2025.
Multiple supermarkets serve the neighborhood including My Basket stores at several locations in Minamioi 6-chome, near Tachiaigawa Station, and Sotetsu Rozen at Minamioi 4-14-6, with operating hours generally from 7:00-8:00 AM until 11:00 PM-midnight. Within 500 meters of nearby stations, there are 24 convenience stores and 7 late-night operating supermarkets, with 4 located within 2 minutes' walk from stations, and one operating 24 hours. For more extensive shopping, Oimachi Station features large commercial facilities including Atre Oimachi, Hankyu Oimachi Garden, Yamada Denki LABI Shinagawa-Oimachi, and Ito-Yokado Oimachi Store. The area is home to attractions like Shinagawa Aquarium, Oi Racecourse, and Heiwaijima Boat Race venue, which draw weekend crowds. The dining scene includes numerous local restaurants and izakayas, with residents also having easy access to the diverse food options concentrated around Omori and Oimachi stations.

Minamioi represents a practical residential choice in southern Shinagawa Ward, offering the dual advantages of affordability and accessibility. The neighborhood successfully balances its traditional downtown character with modern residential convenience, providing ample daily shopping options, quality educational facilities, and nearby green spaces. Its strategic location between Omori and Oimachi stations ensures excellent transportation links to central Tokyo, Haneda Airport, and the broader Kanto region. While it lacks the glamour of Shinagawa's more developed areas, Minamioi compensates with a quieter living environment, family-friendly amenities, and comparatively reasonable housing costs. The area suits those prioritizing functional, peaceful urban living with solid infrastructure over trendy commercial districts.
